Image from NASA’s Aqua satellite as it passed over northern Quebec on November 25, 2012. Those ice-free areas are Pingualuit and Couture craters. Both craters were formed millions of years ago by meteorites striking the Earth’s surface, and today they hold deep lakes. Couture is approximately 8km wide and has a water depth of 150m. Pingualuit’s lake is about 3km across and has a depth of 246m. (NASA/Jeff Schmaltz, LANCE MODIS Rapid Response Team at NASA GSFC) Around the Solar System April 2013
